Dutch Weave vs Square Weave: Which Filter Mesh Do You Need?

Square weave for simple sieving, dutch weave for depth filtration: how to tell them apart and pick the right one.

Square weave basics

Square woven mesh has the same count of warp and shute wires, forming square openings with straight-through paths.
It is the standard choice for sieving, grading and coarse-to-medium filtration where a clean pass-through opening is needed.

Dutch weave basics

Dutch weave uses a fine shute wire and coarser warp wire, creating tapered, shaped openings rather than square ones.
Particles are retained on the surface and build a filter cake, which improves retention over time.

When to choose square weave

Choose square weave for simple sizing, sifting and applications where you want a known, uniform opening and easy cleaning.
Typical uses include test sieving, food processing and architectural mesh.

When to choose dutch weave

Choose plain dutch or twilled dutch weave for high-pressure filtration where fine particles must be caught, such as polymer melt filtration, aerospace and chemical service.
Twilled reversible dutch mesh is supplied in belt form for screen changers, where one roll can outlast several hundred conventional screen packs.
